Ear Candy For The Mind is Opening a Digital Music Store
Hey Gang,
In the next couple of weeks Ear Candy For The Mind will be opening a digital music store where you will be able to download the songs of artist heard on the station. It will be set up similar to iTunes but I will be building the store myself and selling just the music that I want to turn my listeners onto. The songs will be 99¢ with entire albums selling for $9.99 to $12.99 range. The coolest part of the service is how easy it is for independent bands and artists have their music liscensed and added to the catelogue,,, or even open up their own store. if you would like to find out more info feel free to email me...mayhall@fuse.net.
Ear Candy For The Mind joins MySpace.com
Hey Gang,
Finally got hip and joined MySpace.com <Yeah click it... you know you want to.
Check it out and join my friends list and let me know what's up musically and mentally. I also have some of my design work to puruse. Grade it! Trash It! BUY IT!

Galactic Starship Quicksilver Messenger Service Reunion North Fork Theatre 2006-02-10 Complete Show
Short form: This is one of the best Starship performances ever! Galactic plays Jeff Beck tunes, and the Quicksilver Messenger Service rises from the grave!
In retrospect, it's probably hard to explain the pandemonium that went on at this show, you'd probably have to have been there. The beginning was absolutely awful. There was some shouting, a huge run for the box office for refunds (for several reasons), and even more shouting after that. There were some other uncomfortable moments, also.
But as the night progressed, what was left of the audience seemed to settle down, and with them, so did the performers. By the time the main act presented here hit the stage, the audience had dwindled to less than half of those who initially came in for the show.
It might have been a horrorshow. Instead, the rest of us were treated to an unbelievable evening.
As I said in the beginning, it's kind of hard to explain the wave of negativity that swept the audience in the beginning of the night. Some people left right away, when it was announced that Jefferson Starship member Marty Balin was not going to perform. Frankly, from listening to this show, he wasn't missed. The playing was MUCH harder without him.
Former Grateful Dead member Tom Constantenten then came on stage. He's way past his prime, but at least he is among the living. His second number was written by Monty Python member Eric Idle. It consisted of "F*** Bush" in endless repetition, over and over again. You might think that it was funny, but the way in which it was presented sent droves of other people to the box office demanding a refund. It was in incredibly bad taste. We weren't far from the entrance, and we could see people yelling at the management to get out of their tickets. The audience was writhing in their seats, not only because of the Bush number, but because... damn, the guy can't play anymore.
When Country Joe McDonald came on stage, he praised Cindy Sheehan, to mostly silence. If you don't know who she is, check the name on Google. The CJ torrent has already been posted, and it's a great show. CJ also did an anti-Bush number. His attitude, when put out of the context of the evening, is acceptable to practically everybody. Even if you are violently against that message, you still have to consider the source, and for that it's ok. As I said, it's a great show and you should listen to it. But, the effect it had was greatly magnified by the previous events. At the end of his set, less than half the audience remained.
The Starship's arrival was stunning. They blew the roof off! Everybody settled down and the place got friendly again. For two full hours, they played their hearts out.
The band consisted of four members of Galactic, Diane, Paul, and Steve Freiberg from the Quicksilver Messenger Service. Mr. Freiberg is sort of a crossover member to the Starship, he wrote and sang the tune "Jane", which was performed this evening.
Everybody rotated and mixed it up. Where I can remember it, the group combinations are listed on the individual FLAC files. Mostly it was Starship, and that combination is the default. The end jam is to die for.

Frank Zappa
Amougies (Belgium), Actuel Festival
24 to 27 October 1969
source: audience recording - not the best but historic to Flyd and Zappa Fans
This is an amazing find that I'm sure will delight fans of Frank Zappa and the bands concerned alike. A little background : the Actuel festival was organized by the publication of the same name (who, under different editorship, went on to become a prime mover of the French counterculture in the early to mid-70s) in collaboration with the fledgling BYG label. It was originally going to take place in or near Paris, but French authorities forbid it and the marquee was eventually set up a few miles outside the French border, on Belgian soil. It took place over 5 nights, entertaining an audience of 15-20,000 to a unique mixture of progressive pop, free jazz and contemporary music.
Frank Zappa was present at the festival (well, the first four days, it seems) in a twofold capacity. First, as Captain Beefheart's road manager; secondly, as M.C., assisting Pierre Lattes, a famous radio/TV presenter at the time (and the pop music editor for Actuel magazine). The latter task proved problematic given FZ's very limited mastery of French, the prevailing language among the audience, who themselves didn't seem to understand much English. Instead, FZ relinquished his M.C. job for one of occasional guest guitarist.
As far as I know, with the exception of FZ's performance with Captain Beefheart, this collects all of his jams with participating bands. A couple of films, directed by Jerome Laperrousaz and Jean-Noel Roy, came out in 1970 but were instantly banned because of objections from various bands (most notably Pink Floyd) whose permission hadn't been properly secured. Zappa's performance with Beefheart is included in one of them, and since the audio of the film (unlike the film itself) is in circulation, possibly in better sound than I could provide, I decided not to include it.
The whereabouts of the master tapes for the festival, if any exist, are unknown. What recordings are circulating are either the soundtrack of the film, or taken from radio broadcasts (on Luxemburg's RTL and Belgium's RTBF). The source used here is an audience recording made by a young French member of the audience using a now antiquated amateur tape recorder. The original tapes have been newly transferred, but even so, the sound quality is rather poor. Still, it seems to be the only source available at this time, so that will have to do for now.
Most legendary, of course, is Frank Zappa's jam with Pink Floyd on a very extended "Interstellar Overdrive". Apparently, despite the wealth of Pink Floyd bootlegs in circulation, no one seems to have their Amougies set, so this will probably delight a lot of people. Browing various PF-related websites, there even seems to be a debate on whether the jam ever took place. Well, here is the final proof that it did.
Now, the tracklist:
1. Aynsley Dunbar's Retaliation: unknown title (7:08)
[October 24]
Victor Brox (vocals, harmonica); John Moorshead (guitar); Alex (Erroneous) Dmochowski (bass); Aynsley Dunbar (drums)
2. Pink Floyd: Interstellar Overdrive (20:25)
[October 25]
David Gilmour (guitar); Richard Wright (organ); Roger Waters (bass); Nick Mason (drums)
3. Caravan: If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You (7:55)
[October 26]
Pye Hastings (guitar & vocals); David Sinclair (keyboards); Richard Sinclair (bass & vocals); Richard Coughlan (drums)
4. Blossom Toes: unknown title (26:10)
[October 26]
Brian Godding (guitar, vocals & keyboards); Jim Cregan (guitar & vocals); Brian Belshaw (bass & vocals); Kevin Westlake (drums)
5. Sam Apple Pie: unknown title (6:04)
[October 27]
Sam Sampson (vocals & harmonica); Danny Barnes (lead guitar); Andy Johnson (slide guitar); Bob Renny (bass & vocals); Lee Baxter Hayes Jr (drums)
(Note: I understand FZ jammed with some of the free jazz players. Sadly the taper was into rock, not jazz, and didn't bother recording any of the jazz acts.)

Gong Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy
I first got turned on to Gong and the Trilogy during high school by a guy who owned a Record Collectors Shop across town. This was some 8 years before I ever heard the Grateful Dead. It was 1978 and I was also just getting turned on to The Lord of the Rings series. While Tolkins hobbits tried to get the ring back to middle Earth. A hobbit of the Cantebury Music scene, Daevid Allen, was busy writing a rock opera about Pot Head Pixies and Flying Tea Pots. The year was 1973 when Allen started writing the trilogy loosely based around the Gong Mythology. Since that time the story has grown longer and now covers 5 volumes (cds/records) with the last being released in 2000.
Gong Radio Gnome Invisible Pt.1 - Flying Teapot

The Story behind
The Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy as told by
Daevid Allen

Radio Gnome is a kind of Telepathic Pirate radio which transmits from a Flying Teapot coming from ze Planet Gong. It touches down in er... Tibet but accidently lands on the prayer mat of Lawrence the Alien who is most upset & does an ape dance on his drums. The teapot is fullup of Pot Head Pixies who are amazed at dis, their first meeting with an earthman. Ha! But the great Yogi Banana Anada rescues them & introduces the PHP to the band who do the first number on side two. Then the great sages and wise gurus of weee pixies named Octave Doctors are there & layup & down subliminal secret wisdoms via the CRYSTAL MACHINE but who should show up but Zero The Hero who sings a song of love & devotion for the weee pixies. But the PHP don't wanna be worshipped & so they take zero thru the land of scat & magnetic fields of Bad de Grass where he sees a Flying Teapot & meets the WITCH Yoni who bewitches everybody into total float and sings here theme song......

This is a must listen for any gong freaks out there. This was recorded at a conference which focuses on Allen's early period in Britain with Soft Machine and his tapeworks. I could not find out when this was recorded but I would have to think in the late 70's. "The Switch Doctor" is featured here as well as a few other segments on tape which he plays to the audience.
This was digitally transferred using Audiocleanic, encoded to .shn with MKW Toolkit. No noise reduction. The beginning of this tape has Daevid's first sentence a bit cut.

Gongmatrix Rage ON ProgFest 1999 at The Palace of Fine Arts • San Francisco, CA 5/30/99n
Staying with the side projects by members of Gong, Here is a performance by Gilli Smyth and her band Gongmatrix in the Lobby of the Palace of Fine Arts. The theater was having trouble with the sound in the auditorium so they offered to play in the lobby while people waited to get into the auditorium. On this tune she sings a profolific poem about world events from the 60's up to now as seen thru a higher conscience while the band locks into a hypnotic groove.

Imagine yourself listening to this song while praying to the sun gods during the Summer Solstice at of all places, Stonehenge, UK. Hanging out with hobbits, witches, hippies and pixies. This was one of the last big free concerts before they closed access to the actual site. NO MORE TOUCHIN" THE ROCKS!
except from ozrics site
Ozric Tentacles formed in 1982 when Ed and Roly met up with Joie Hinton, Tig (Nick Van Gelder) and Gavin. After a session discussing imaginary breakfast cereals around a Stonehenge festival campfire, the band became Ozric Tentacles (good job too, since some of the alternatives were Desmond Whisps, Gilbert Chunks and Malcolm Segments). The samples and general ethnic vibes that Joie had gathered on his visits to India became a major part of the band's sound.

Bolshem People ( pre-Ozric Tentacles)
except from ozrics site
SH: Where did the name the Bolshem People come from? Did you record any gigs under this name? (The Bolshem People was a name that was briefly used in 1982-83)
ED: The name Bolshem People doesn't mean anything...sorry , but there you go. We did one gig under that name... the lineup , as far as I remember , was Ed, Roly , Tig , Gavin , Ben Smith (On vocals ! and tambourine). It was in London at some college or other.
SH: Was the first appearance at Stonehenge in 1983 under this name or had you already started using the Ozric Tentacles?
ED: When we went to Stonehenge we didn't have a name. However, Ozric Tentacles was floating in the back of my mind at the time, so when asked for the band name I just said "Ozric Tentacles" for a laugh really... it seemed to stick!

Grateful Dead Shakedown Street> Uncle John's Band Reprise
Dick's Pick's Volume 5 - Oakland Auditorium, Oakland, CA 12/26/79 |

|
|
This tune was the encore of the first of a 6 night New Year's run in Oakland, CA Jerry and the boys bring the 70's to an end in grand fashion just going balls out on this version of Shakedown. This was Brent Mydland's first show as the keyboardist. He and Jerry just go off on this sick jam that is enough to pop the top off a wookie. Jerry's transition from Shakedown to Uncle John's comes out of left field but the rest of the band quickly jumps on board to end the show with the reprise. This show set the tone for the rest of the New Year's run and the Brent era of the dead.

The Gourds Gin & Juice
Shinbox The Gourds are some twisted puppies. Here they take this Snoop Dogg hit and gzizzled it into a bluegrass ode that only the homies in the hills of Tennessee can truely appreciate. Imagine if you will, Snoop and Dr. Dre cruisin' the farm on their pimped out low rider John Deer trackers looking for hoes while sippin' corn mash and chewin' on some wacky toe-backy. All you need is a bud between your cheek and gum. Or you can just buy the documentary called "Somethings Brewin' in Shiner" and see the old geezer version featuring the music of The Gourds.

This was a special day of fun and music for Me and my buddy Dave Elias. The festival was set up along a four or five block area around a park situated on the Scioto River. After much walking and searching for the tastiest (and cheapest) ribs, we ended up having some pulled pork samiches with what must have been pure Habenaro sauce. My mouth was on fire for hours. This was a good excuse to have some coldies so we headed a couple of blocks East to the Brewery Distict where Widespread Panic was playing. After a couple of adult beverages Spread started and we got to see a couple of tunes before we had to head back for the start of Los Lobos. By the time we got there it was packed with 6-7,000 people parked all over the place. The band was high energy all night long but the hightlight has to be the Bertha>WR> BH jam at the end of the show. It had all the whole audience up and shaking their booty.
H.O.R.D.E. Jam Improv The H.O.R.D.E. Festival • Workshop Stage • Riverbend Music Center • Cincinnati, OH 7/29/97
The Workshop Stage, a small stage out on the concourse of Riverbend, was where all the bands on H.O.R.D.E. tour would just get up and let the notes flow where they may. On this given night there were many musicains on stage but the main players included Les Claypool on bass, Dr. Dan Matrazzo (Col. Bruce & Fiji Mariners) on keyboards and Jeff Sipe (ARU, Leftover Salmon, Planet Z, etc) on drums. There were only about 300 or 400 people who came early enough to catch this jam. My buddy, Dougie "Slug" Inmann, was the only taper and this has not been circulated very much so I hope you enjoy!

This was my first Grateful Dead show!!! I had no clue what I was about to experience and how much this would change my life. From the pre-game shakedown to the musical vibe that took over my body and made me dance and noodle like I have been doing it for years. By the second set I was primed and ready to fly to the moon. They break out Iko Iko and people went nuts, including me. I spent several weeks looking for any studio album that had Iko Iko on it only to find out that it did not exist. So this is when I started collecting live shows. I traded a taper for an okay copy from a pair Nak 700's. It was not until almost 15 years later that I finally found the sbd. Whooooo Hoooo! I got to see 22 shows from 1985 until 1990 when things started to get too weird.

ARU had many line-up changes through the years including Col. Bruce boogin' himself in October of '94. Out of all of them, 1993 was probabaly my favorite. They had some of their sickest shows ever that year. It was Matt Mundy's mandolin playing that made the biggest difference. He plays off beat fills to Jimmy's blistering leeds only to answer him back with a leed of his own. Meanwhile Oteil and Jeff are locked into a funky ass pocket. The Col. is being the Col. leading the nights festivities all the while messin' with the unhip peoples minds.
